Data cables: USB, HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet

A cable is a small thing that carries everything. A good wire means clean audio, a stable picture, and transfer speeds that match the box. A bad one means 4K stutter, artifacts, packet loss, and hiss in headphones. Buying a PC cable “whatever’s cheapest” is almost always a bad call.

Data cable types

  • USB. Type-A (classic), Type-C (universal), micro and mini (legacy gear). Speed tiers: USB 2.0 (480 Mbps), USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps), USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps), Thunderbolt 3/4 (40 Gbps).
  • HDMI. Video + audio. Versions 1.4 (1080p), 2.0 (4K 60Hz), 2.1 (4K 120Hz, 8K, eARC).
  • DisplayPort. The HDMI alternative for monitors. DP 1.2/1.4/2.0 — different resolution and refresh ceilings.
  • Ethernet (RJ-45). Cat5e (1 Gbps), Cat6 (1–10 Gbps up to ~55 m), Cat6a (10 Gbps up to ~100 m), Cat7.
  • Audio cables. 3.5 mm jack, RCA, TOSLINK optical, XLR for studio and stage.

How to choose a cable

  1. Length. Longer runs mean more loss at high frequencies. Everyday 1.5–3 m lengths usually “just work.” 5+ meters for USB3 or 4K HDMI often needs an active cable or fiber.
  2. Throughput. Match the device spec. USB 3 gear in a USB 2 port tops out at 480 Mbps.
  3. Compatibility. Type-C ≠ Thunderbolt. Mini DisplayPort ≠ Thunderbolt. HDMI 2.1 ≠ HDMI 2.0. Verify before you buy.
  4. Shielding and build. Cheap unshielded junk injects noise into both audio and video.
