Transfer nodes
Transfer units for color laser printers
In color laser engines the four toners are first transferred to an intermediate belt (ITB — Intermediate Transfer Belt) and only then to the paper. That lets the four colors register within microns for a sharp, even print. As the belt wears, prints pick up defects: banding, ghosting, and color misregistration.
Types of transfer hardware
- Intermediate Transfer Belt (ITB / IBT belt). The primary transfer stage — the belt where the color image is assembled.
- Transfer roller (secondary transfer). The roller that moves the finished image from the belt to the sheet.
- Transfer kit (assembly). Typically includes the belt, rollers, and sometimes extra hardware — often replaced as a set.
Monochrome printers usually have a simpler path, often a single roller. Color engines use a heavier, more expensive transfer stack.
Wear symptoms
- Banding or spots that repeat at a fixed pitch.
- Uneven color or ghost images from previous pages.
- A “Replace transfer kit” message or a fault code on the panel.
- Channel-to-channel shift (for example cyan vs yellow).
Do not ignore the warnings — a worn transfer section can contaminate photoconductors and other imaging hardware, turning a belt job into a far costlier repair.
Compatibility
A transfer belt always maps to a specific printer. HP Color LaserJet, Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE, Xerox VersaLink/Phaser, and Kyocera each use their own part numbers — match by engine family and P/N. Pricing and availability track the hardware generation closely.
