Laptop power bricks and chargers
Laptop chargers usually die for a simple reason: the cable keeps bending right at the plug. After a year or two the conductors fray, contact is lost, and the laptop stops charging. Sometimes the “brick” itself fails too — electrolytics, diodes, transistors.
Can you use “someone else’s” adapter? Yes — if voltage, current, and the plug match. That’s where the pain starts: nobody enjoys decoding laptop specs, and a mismatch means either “won’t charge” or, worse, a fried input power controller.
Charger types
- OEM units. From the laptop maker (HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, Acer, MSI). Perfect fit, factory cable, long life. Highest price.
- Compatible (high-copy). Third-party brands build to the original P/N. Easy to match, fair price, good quality — if you buy from a trusted source.
- Universal power bricks. One housing plus a tip kit for common jacks (HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, Acer, etc.). Handy if you run several laptops or travel a lot.
- USB-C PD adapters. For modern ultrabooks that charge over USB-C. One cable for laptop, phone, and tablet. Just make sure PD wattage is at least what the factory brick delivered — often 65W or 100W.
How to choose a power adapter
- Power (W). Must be at least the OEM rating. If the original is 65W, 90W or 120W is fine — the laptop draws only what it needs. Undersized bricks cause trouble.
- Voltage (V). Must match the original. 19V means 19V, not “about.”
- Current (A). Can match or exceed the label. Lower than specified — no.
- Connector. Each vendor has its own barrel: HP often 4.5×3.0, Dell 7.4×5.0 or 4.5×3.0, Lenovo rectangular or round 5.5×2.5. Double-check before ordering.
- Laptop brand/line. You can’t buy a charger “in general” — only for a specific family. Confirm by P/N or exact model.
Universal chargers: when they make sense
A universal laptop PSU helps when:
- you maintain several brands in the bag;
- you travel and don’t want a separate brick per machine;
- you need power now and the OEM pack isn’t handy.
Downsides exist. You must set voltage manually before plugging in — a mistake can cook the machine. Tips sometimes wobble in the jack. For daily duty, a “proper” dedicated adapter is nicer.

Reviews and ordering
Each listing has buyer notes — often specifics like “HP 250 G7, third month running, normal warmth, plug fits tight.” More useful than a bare spec table.
